Why so little English?

"Recruit the best employees, and the customers will recruit themselves."

Most businesses try to use their webspace to improve their sales. Tokyo Diner is no different, but we believe that - in the long term - the best way to maintain a high level of sales is simply to maintain high standards of customer satisfaction.

Instead of targeting our website at getting more customers, we prefer to use it to introduce Tokyo Diner to potential employees - particularly those who are about to graduate from professional chef schools in Japan.

We realise that our restaurant will only ever be as good as the people working in it. We aim to select bright, well-educated, self-motivated staff who are either Japanese or who can demonstrate that they have a high level of respect for traditional Japanese culture. (All our recipes, manuals and systems are in Japanese, so every employee must be able to read Japanese and communicate in it.)

We are sorry to disappoint you if you wanted to read through the whole of the website in English. Translation from Japanese into good English cannot be done quickly; but we will try to make more of the site bilingual wherever we can.

A few words about the webcam

Most of the chef school graduates are very young. The idea of travelling abroad and having their first job in such an exciting, exotic location as London is like a dream for them. And yet, being so young, they are only vaguely aware of the pitfalls of being lured away from home and possibly even being exploited by some inscrutable, unscrupulous strangers. From our point of view, we are confident in the knowledge that all the young graduates we have ever employed have told us that coming to Tokyo Diner has been a really positive experience for them; but, from the point of view of young chef school graduates, our job offer may seem just 'too good to be true'.

That is the whole point of the webcam: it is simply a way of putting the young chefs' (and their parents') minds at ease by demonstrating that the restaurant really does exist and that Tokyo Diner's website is not some sort of scam. "A picture is worth a thousand words" and the webcam is the simplest way of conveying the whole purpose and character of the restaurant. Many of the graduates have subsequently told us that it was only because of the webcam that they took the website seriously and went on to read what was on offer.
